More 2010 Census Data
Posted Wednesday, June 15, at 10:46 AM

In this week's print edition of The Concordian, I wrote a story about the changing demographics in Concordia. I included as much relevant information as possible in the story. However, as happens with any story, some facts do not make the cut. If you are interested in seeing more about Concordia's demographic profile, here is the link: http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=DEC_10_DP_DPDP1&prodType=table...

Local seismograph registers massive earthquake
Posted Wednesday, March 16, at 3:51 PM

While many people are aware of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that crippled much of Japan's eastern seaboard, something you might not know is that the earthquake also created some seismic activity in the Concordia area. A seismograph currently installed west of Concordia on the farm of Gil Alligood has not shown much activity since it was placed on the farm last December. However, the recent incident in Japan has changed that...

"Worth one's salt"
Posted Wednesday, January 12, at 12:38 PM

In every-day conversation, we use popular phrases or clichés without a second thought as to what they mean or their origins. In every culture, the people have settled on particular meanings for each word and phrases; therefore, it is not necessary to question common colloquial terms. And typically I don't either. However, if I hear a certain phrase more than once in a day, I usually start to wonder: "Where does that come from?" or "What does that really mean?"...

A ferry tale
Posted Thursday, December 23, at 11:05 AM

I really like learning little pieces of trivial information that are only useful during trivia games and small talk. As a reporter, I learn something new during every story; however, not all of it is relevant to the story. So I have decided to use my blog to share those little tidbits of information...

What kind of tree is it?
Posted Wednesday, December 1, at 4:23 PM

It's that time of year again. Time to pull those large, misshappened boxes, with strip after strip of duct tape wrapped around them, from the closet, basement or attic and start the yearly ritual of decorating the house for Christmas. I personally do not find any satisfaction in Christmas decorations, but my wife, Katie, loves it. I have decided the best thing for me to do is to stand aside and let her go to work on decorating our home...

The Risk of growing old
Posted Wednesday, November 17, at 4:36 PM

After graduating college, I thought adulthood would be boring. I assumed fun was something only children and teenagers enjoyed. Adults just worked and raised families. However, I have been quite surprised to learn that being an adult is just as fun -- maybe even more fun...

The story behind the story
Posted Monday, November 15, at 2:46 PM

Every journalist has significant moments in his or her career that will never be forgotten. For me, it was Ike Skelton's watch party in Lexington last Tuesday, Nov. 2. Partisan politics aside, it was a historic moment. The night was significant not only because it was the end of an era, but also it was a journalistic adrenaline rush. ...

Random adventures or misadventures
Posted Friday, October 29, at 2:18 PM

This is my first blog post for The Concordian, therefore, it is necessary to explain the nature of my posts. I will be writing about random adventures or misadventures, which usually involve me and my wife, Katie, or me and friends. My wife, Katie, and I are notorious for our funny adventures, which do not usually go according to plan, but few things in life do...

The purpose of my blog is to share interesting facts about Concordia or the surrounding area. I tend to run across lots of interesting stuff while working on stories, but can't always write full-length stories about those facts. Therefore, I will put them on my blog. I am a 2008 graduate of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO. I have a degree in communications and religious studies. My wife, Katie, and I live in Concordia with our dog, Chloe. I am a general assignment reporter, which means I cover a wide range of stories such as community/school events, accidents, crime and human interests. I always appreciate comments or ideas so do not hesitate to give me a call or send an e-mail.
