Lady Huskers capture third
Higginsville was able to connect on only 10 of 28 freethrow attempts, but the thirdseeded Lady Huskers were still able to beat the No.
4 Lexington Minutewomen 50- 42 to claim the third-place plaque in the Lafayette County Basketball Tournament Saturday in the old gymnasium at Santa Fe High School in Alma.
After the two teams played to an 8-8 tie through one quarter, Higginsville used eight second-quarter points from Tarin Stuenkel to edge ahead 22-20 at the half.
But it was a 22-11 third quarter for the Lady Huskers that gave them a big enough cushion to overcome the poor free-throw shooting (2 for 11) in the fourth quarter to escape with the victory.
The Lady Huskers were led to the win by Jennifer Garrett's 15 points.
Shelby Woodward contributed 13 points and Stuenkel nine.
Lexington, which was 12 for 22 from the line, had 12 points from Julie Summerlin and 10 points apiece from Ashley Swafford and Jennie Ritchie.
