Lone Jack eliminates Cougars
Playing on their home floor, the fifth-seeded Crest Ridge Cougars basketball team was able to stay with No. 4 Lone Jack, but the Mules eventually won 56-53 in the first round of Class 2, District 12 action last week Tuesday.
The game was tied 13-13 after one quarter, and the Mules seemingly took complete control with an 18-3 second-quarter run.
Back came Heath Heck-adon's Cougars, trimming the lead to 39-27 by the end of the third quarter and slicing within double digits midway through the fourth.
"The second quarter just did us in. You can't score three points in a quarter and expect to win," Heckadon said.
"The kids battled all the way and gave themselves a chance."
Alex Everhart paced CRHS with 22 points, including six of nine from the free-throw line. Jordan Erisman added 12 points, Tanner Wagoner seven, Kyle Shull six and Nathan Francy three.
The Cougars were a collective 14 for 24 from the charity stripe.
"The young kids got us back in this game," Heckadon said. "The future is bright."
Lone Jack, which was 14 for 23 from the stripe, was led by Joey Rains with 18 points.
The Cougars finish the season 10-16.
Crest Ridge loses the services of seniors Francy, Ben Owens and Shull.
