Wednesday, July 28, 2010

LaCoMo East's Junior League baseball all-star team was still alive as of Tuesday night. That's when the local team was supposed to play Hillsboro for the state championship in Concordia. It is a game that was postponed because of wet ground Monday night. The result was not available at press time.

The winner advances to the Regional Tournament at Fort Wayne, Ind., Aug. 7-12.

LaCoMo East lost its first game 13-3 to Hillsboro Saturday but rebounded to beat Daniel Boone 11-4 in a rain-shortened game Saturday and edged Hillsboro 3-2 Sunday.

Survival Game

LaCoMo East 3, Hillsboro 2

Getting a stellar pitching performance from Austin Beydler, LaCoMo East remained alive in the state tournament with a 3-2 victory over Hillsboro, which just a day before had beaten LaCoMo East 13-3.

Hillsboro jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

LaCoMo East battled back to score two in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Isaiah Roepe.

Hillsboro rebounded to tie the game with a run in the second.

LaCoMo East's Wyatt Wil-kinson reached base and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Cass Heimsoth in the third.

Beydler hurled through the sixth inning before giving way to Trent McGinnis for the seventh.

McGinnis allowed a hit but retired three Hillsboro batters on strikes, including the final strikeout with the runner on third base via a stolen base and a wild pitch.

Wilkinson, Hon, Heimsoth, Cory Meineka and Roepe each had a base hit.

Beydler allowed two runs on three hits and one walk and struck out two, earning the win.

After Daniel Boone scored one in the fourth, LaCoMo East finished off the scoring with five in the fifth. The game was halted and eventually called with two outs in the top of the sixth because of lightning and torrential rain.
