High school fall sports practices start Monday

Monday is a big day for all high school sports teams across the state as fall workouts begin.

Not all coaches in the I-70 Conference were able to be reached before Tuesday morning in time for publication. But several participated, and following is a list of workouts for at least the first few days.

Football

Concordia

Under the leadership of John Cox, the Orioles have had a lot of success, including their first- and second-ever playoff wins. The Orioles will practice from 7 to 11:30 a.m. Mon-day and Tuesday and from 6 to 10:30 p.m. next Wednesday.

Saint Paul

Head coach Larry Laubenstein welcomes the Saints to campus Sunday night. The Saints will have four different practices Monday through Friday next week. The first will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Then will be a position practice from 1 to 2 p.m. A full workout comes next from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. The final practice will be from about 6:45 to 8 p.m. School starts Aug. 16 and practices will run from 4 to 6 p.m. each weekday.

Santa Fe

The Chiefs, being led by Andy Frerking, will hold practices from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The workouts will be reduced to 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. next Thursday and Friday. School starts Aug. 18.

Sweet Springs

Kyle Naylor, son of late Marshall High School Owls Coach Cecil Naylor, takes over as head coach of the Greyhounds from Tim Smith. Nay-lor was unable to be reached by press time to get his team's practice schedule.

Crest Ridge

Back for a third year is Chris Cavanah as Cougars' mentor. His team will hold workouts 7 to 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to noon each day next week. Aug. 16-18 the schedule is the same, changing Aug. 19 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m, the same schedule they will have once school starts Aug. 24.

Lone Jack

Mike Hedrick is the head coach of the Mules, who will practice from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 3 to 6 p.m. Friday.

Orrick

The Bearcats, under the direction of head coach Pat Richard, are scheduled to go 6:30 to 9 a.m. the first three days and return for their annual "Midnight Madness" event at midnight on Aug. 11. The two-a-day schedule continue for the rest of the first week and until school starts Aug. 18.

Wellington

Quenton Bainbridge returns to lead the Wellington Tigers, a Class 1 semifinalist last year. The Tigers will hold their two-a-days 6 a.m. to noon the first three days and then the rest of the practices will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m., unless the weather is inclement. In that case, practice time will be 6 to 8 p.m. The "Black and Gold" scrimmage is set for Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Concordia

Under the direction of head coach Leslie Basye, the Lady Orioles will have two different schedules during the first week. On Monday, Thursday and Friday, the Lady Orioles will hold practice sessions from 8 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the workouts will be from 6 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.On Aug. 16, two days before classes start, the Lady Orioles will get into their regular groove of practices from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Saint Paul

New head coach Aaron Marsh said the Lady Saints will arrive on campus Sunday night and begin practice Monday. The first full week, the Lady Saints will work out from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and again from 1 to 3:30 p.m. In addition, there will be "a volleyball activity in the evening," Marsh said. Once school starts on Aug. 16, the Lady Saints will hold practice from 4 to 6 p.m.

Santa Fe

Stacy Thomas returns for another season at the helm of the Lady Chiefs. Her team will work out 7 to 11 a.m. from Monday through next Friday. The next week, workouts are set for 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Sweet Springs

Veteran coach Kristen Niemeyer is back to lead the Lady 'Hounds, who will hold workouts 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. each of the five weekdays next week. After that was up in the air at press time. SSHS starts school Aug. 18.

Crest Ridge

Katie Woolsey returns to lead the Lady Cougars, who will hold practices from 7 to 8:30 and 9 to 11 each morning before school starts on Aug. 24.

Lone Jack

Jerry MacLean is Lone Jack's head coach, but no other information was available at press time.

Orrick

Susan Rodenberg is back as head coach of the Lady Bearcats but could not be reached for a practice schedule by press time.

Wellington

The Lady Tigers are under the direction of Ryan True again. They will practice each day next week from 8:45 to 11 a.m. True said the practices could end earlier or be extended depending on the players' progress.
