Higginsville grabs top seeds in tourney
Higginsville, which has won the Lafayette County Tourna-ment five times (2005-09) and played in the championship game 10 straight years, has grabbed the No. 1 seed in 2012 event to be held at Santa Fe High School in Alma next week.
The Huskers, 4-2, have drawn Concordia, 3-5, in the first game of the tournament at 3 p.m. Monday.
Two-time defending champion Wellington, 4-1, tangles with fifth-seeded Knob Noster, 2-4, in the second first-round game at 4:30 p.m.
The 4-3 and host Chiefs, who have won the tournament two times (1996 and 2001) and played in the title game six times, have earned the No. 2 seed. They play seventh-seeded Lexington, 0-6, at 6 p.m. Mon-day.
Reeling in the No. 3 seed is Carrollton, 6-0. The Trojans will be playing sixth-seeded Saint Paul, 5-2, at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
The first-round girls' games are Tuesday.
The Lady Huskers, who won the tournament in 2009 and are 4-2 this season, will tangle with the host and No. 8-seeded Lady Chiefs, 4-3, at 4 p.m. The SFHS girls last won the tournament in 2003, the back end of two straight crowns.
The Saint Paul Lady Saints, 5-2, have been selected the No. 4 seed and take on fifth-seeded Lexington, 0-7, at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Saints have played in the title game each of the past three years but haven't won the event since 1998.
Second-seeded Concordia, 5-2, will play No. 7-seeded Knob Noster, 0-4, at 7 p.m. The Lady Orioles are two-time defending champions and have won the crown six times.
Sixth-seeded Wellington, 4-1, plays No. 3-seeded Carrollton, 2-4, in the final first-round game at 8:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers have won the title three times, the last time being in 1999.
The tournament continues through Jan. 7.
