Lady Bearcats wind up fourth at Wellington

Third-seeded Orrick failed to hold its seeding, losing the third-place game in the Wellignton Tournament Friday.

The Lady Bearcats were beaten 40-30 by sixth-seeded Marshall.

Orrick started well, grabbing an 8-5 lead after the first quarter. Then things started coming apart.

The Lady Owls edged ahead 13-12 at the intermission and pulled out to a 26-20 lead through three stanzas.

Madison Winters came on strong in the fourth quarter for the Lady Bearcats, scoring six of her nine points, but they weren't enough.

Marshall was led by Molly Evans with 12 points.

Starting fast, the Lady Bearcats had just enough in the tank to hold off Hardin-Central by six points last week Tuesday.

The Lady Bearcats built a 16-8 lead through one quarter. The lead was 26-17 at the half and 32-26 going to the fourth quarter.

Madison Winters led the Lady Bearcats with 11 points. McKenna Wright added 10 points.

"We had a good first quarter but had a hard time finishing the game," Orrick head coach Mitch Comstock said. "We have to do a better job of finishing possessions on both ends of the floor."

The Bearcats were outscored 25-2 in the opening stanza, and the Red Dragons had control from there.

It was a 34-10 lead for WMA at the half and 47-18 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Mason Karnes paced the Bearcats with nine points.

Pool Play

(4) Kingsville 77, (6) Orrick 54

The Bearcats trailed 19-13 after one quarter, 39-22 at the half and 55-37 with a quarter to play.

Karnes scored 11 of his team-high 22 points in the first quarter. Logan Oldham added eight points.
