Four varsity players back for Saints golf team

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

With the return of four varsity players, the Saint Paul Saints will be tough on the links this year.

Senior Bryan Nierman, juniors Grant Umbach and Nathan Gerdts and sophomore John Bredehoeft made great strides last year.

"Incredible is too weak to describe Bryan's golf," SPLHS head coach Bill Heine said. "Last year's varsity players bring an improved game to this season."

Heine also is hopeful the players who were on the junior-varsity squad have improved enough to step up to replace the seniors lost to graduation. Gone are Derek Bredehoeft, Matt Conner and Austin Faulstich.

He says golfers such as juniors Matt Krater, Ted Mehl, Jon Foster and Sam Hargrave have improved skills from last year.

Heine also lists six golfers new to the team, including freshmen Alex Craig and Raymond Mock, sophomore Tim Ye, juniors Young Jae Lee and Elling Brubak and senior Adam Reddy.
