Nelson hurls SSHS to victory

Thursday, April 4, 2013

Sweet Springs scored two runs in the fourth inning and added an insurance tally in the sixth in a 3-1 home victory over the Northwest Mustangs on March 22.

Derrick Nelson and Adam Martin each reached base and scored for the Greyhounds, 1-0, to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.

Northwest sent seven batters to the plate in the top of the sixth but managed to only get one run off Nelson, who stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jacob Schowengerdt fanned. But when the ball got past the Northwest catcher, Schowengerdt sped safely to first base.

Schowengerdt proceeded to steal second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Nelson.

Nelson hurled the distance, striking out 11.
