Lady Saints hold off Concordia
The Saint Paul Lady Saints scored six runs in their first three at-bats, then had to hold off a late charge by Concordia to claim a 7-6 victory Friday in Concordia.
Saint Paul scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third.
"We had a great first 2-1/2 innings," SPLHS head coach Meredith Marsh said. "Then our third baseman had an injury that halted the game for about 15 minutes, and Concordia stole the momentum for a bit."
The Lady Orioles plated four runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fifth to trail 6-5.
Saint Paul added an insurance run in the sixth, giving it just enough to hold off a seventh-inning rally, which produced one run for the Lady Orioles.
The Lady Saints, 5-4, had seven hits, including two singles from Sydney Bredehoeft. Marissa Brackman added a triple, Alyssa Hamblen a double and Tiffany Bennett, Becca Schulz and Savanna DePee a single each.
Brackman and DePee each scored two runs and Gabby Kueck, Schultz and Bredehoeft one each. Brackman drove in two runs and Breanna Vogelsmeier and Bredehoeft one each.
Vogelsmeier allowed five earned runs on nine hits and seven free passes while striking out two to get the mound win.
"We won the game on the bases," Marsh said. "We were very aggressive, and took a lot of extra bases."
Danielle Krause and Britlin Murray each had two singles to lead the Lady Orioles' nine-hit attack. Rachel Treece, Katlin Murray, Kayla Brackman, Brittany Tolias and Kayla Stuart each had one single.
Katlin Murray, Hailee Langkrahr, Brackman, Britlin Murray, Annisa Foster and Stuart each scored one run. Britlin Murray drove in two runs and Treece and Katlin Murray one each.
Katlin Murray allowed three earned runs. She walked three and fanned 10.
