Students in Judy Roepe's first-grade class looked intently from the reading rug.

"Look at her eyes!" Debbie Kirchhoff, director of Trails Regional Library in Concordia, read. "Can you all do that with your eyes?"

The St. Paul Lutheran School students tried to widen their eyes while Kirchhoff continued reading about characters on a roller coaster Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The library deemed September as First Grade Month, and students were invited to sign up for library cards. For Roepe, reading is the key to learning.

"The best gift a parent can give their child is to read to them," she said.

Library officials encourage first graders, and all youths, to spend some time in the library and to sign up for their own cards any time this month.
