Cornelius J. 'C.J.' Koester
Cornelius J. "C.J." Koester, 88, of Olathe, Kan., and formerly of Marshall, died Dec. 27, 2013, at Aberdeen Village at Olathe. Funeral services were held Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at Marshall. Burial with military rites was in Ridge Park Cemetery at Marshall.
Mr. Koester was born Aug. 10, 1925, at Stover. He was the son of Otto Carl and Laura Wiechert Koester. He married Elda Ruth Albers on Aug. 3, 1947, in Warrensburg. He was a graduate of Central Missouri State University, at Warrensburg, and University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He taught music in Brookfield public schools for two years; was a music teacher, high school principal and superintendent for the Sweet Springs R-7 School District for 14 years; and served as assistant superintendent for Marshall public schools for 14 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of National Education Association, Missouri State Teachers Association, Missouri Association School Business Officials, American Association School Superintendents, Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Saline County Area Retired Teachers Association, Rotary Club in Marshall and American Field Service committee. He was a member of Our Redeemer church serving on the voters' assembly and board of elders, directed the vocal choir, and organized and directed the bell choir.
Mr. Koester is survived by a son, Steven Koester of Gardner, Kan.; a daughter, Mrs. Ken (Diane) Larson of Aurora, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 10, 2010; two brothers; and three sisters.
The pallbearers were Keith Taylor, Nicolas Conover, Bruce Heerboth, Robert Koester, Gunter Stein and Armand Fischer.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the church music department.
