Air Force reservists return from Afghanistan
WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE―224 Air Force reservists from the 442d Fighter Wing here and 72 of their active duty counterparts from the 442 FW's Detachment 303 returned home Sunday, Oct. 26, and Monday, Oct. 27, from a seven-month deployment to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.
The 442 FW deployed 12 A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft along with pilots and support personnel to Afghanistan in March. The 442 FW flew Close Air Support (CAS) missions aimed at protecting American force on the ground and destroying enemy targets across Afghanistan. Support personnel performed aircraft maintenance and filled other vital support roles while assigned to the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing, and the wing flew more than 2,500 sorties. Family members as well as 442 FW leaders gathered to meet the returning deployed members in building 1117.
