Ron and Tammy Bredehoeft opened the newly-expanded showroom of Alma Building Supply last month. An open house is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with food and drinks being served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Charles Dunlap/The Concordian)

Approximately seven months ago, Ron and Tammy Bredehoeft purchased the neighboring space to Alma Building Supply. After renovations, they opened an expanded showroom in the new location last month. The business has gone from cramped quarters to plenty of room for products and displays.

"We've got room to move around over here. We can get more people in here," said Mrs. Bredehoeft. "The stuff we have in here now is -- we had it over there, but it was all jumbled and cramped."

Along with increased space between home improvement products, it has also allowed the Bredehoefts to add more display models of products.

"We're kind of waiting to see what the demand is and what we have space for and then we'll add a few new things here and there," said Mr. Bredehoeft.

The Bredehoefts bought Alma Building Supply in 1991. Before that, however, Mr. Bredehoeft had worked for the business since 1975. He said he hopes the showroom expansion will help bring in more local and area business. After purchasing the neighboring space, it took some remodeling to get it into shape.

"This side was pretty much abandoned for the past 15 years, and it kind of looked like it," said Mr. Bredehoeft.

The business has received positive feedback from customers since moving the showroom to the enlarged space.

"The biggest thing is we can handle more than one person at the store at one time because over there -- there just wasn't room," said Mr. Bredehoeft, adding there is a good local customer base for the store. "Now we can have three or four people at a time and still be comfortable."

He noted the business has access to software for exterior deck designs. The program will render a 3-D image of the proposed deck.

Mr. Bredehoeft also takes pride in his knowledge of the products within the store. He said many of the items he sells, he's personally used in his own projects.

"I've been around the construction industry for quite awhile and seen a lot of new stuff and some of the old stuff still works, too," he said.

Alma Building Supply is located at 217 S. County Road, in Alma.
