Chiefs get past Lone Jack, Crest Ridge
Playing at home all last week, the Santa Fe Chiefs put together quality performances in a 60-54 win over Lone Jack and a 70-50 win over Crest Ridge in back-to-back I-70 Conference contests.
at Santa Fe 60, Lone Jack 54
Trialing by eight points at the half, Santa Fe used a strong third quarter to surge past the Mules to grab the lead for good. They led 42-39 after three quarters.
The Chiefs were able to keep the lead due to their accuracy from the free-throw line down the stretch, including hitting eight of 10 tries in the fourth quarter.
Santa Fe's Truman Sleeper, who was held scoreless in the first 16 minutes, came alive in the second half to pump in 11 points in the third quarter and 13 in the game. Dobber Burton also had 13 points.
Tim Nienhueser and Ben Hinz each scored nine points.
Joey Brandon scored 12 points for the Mules. But none of his points came in the fourth quarter. Nick Kirk added nine points.
at Santa Fe 70, Crest Ridge 50
The Chiefs didn't falter Friday night, keeping the Crest Ridge Cougars winless in league play with a 20-point verdict.
The Chiefs took control from the opening tip, opening a 22-11 lead after the first quarter, thanks in part to 10 points by Sleeper. Burton also tossed in three of his half-dozen three-point shots
The Chiefs rolled on to lead 40-24 by halftime, Burton nailing two more threes.
It was a 55-38 edge with a quarter to play.
Sleeper spread out his other nine points and finished with a game-high 19 points.
Burton added 18 points, Hinz eight points and Andrew Edwards and Luke Schmidt seven each.
Garrett Hoeper tried to get the Cougars back in the game in the third quarter as he netted two three-point baskets and eight points. In the game, he totaled 16 points, including four threes. Justin Donald was next with two fourth-quarter threes and eight points.
