I-70 gridiron squads to play in jamborees Friday
With the official start of the 2015 high school football season just over one week away, all of the squads in Missouri will be eligible to take part in scrimmages.
As has been the procedure with half of the I-70 Conference teams, they will be participating in a jamboree on Friday night on Buhlig Field, in Alma.
Coming off a season in which they won their first-ever outright league title under the tutelage of head coach Larry Laubenstein, the Saint Paul Saints will try to find replacements for a number of players, including six different first-team players. The six players actually filled nine positions on offense and defense, with Peter Lemmons, Eric Allen and James Foster nailing down first-team spots on each side of the line.
The Saints will be taking part in a jamboree on Buhlig Field at Santa Fe High School, in Alma.
Also involved besides the host Chiefs are the Concordia Orioles and the Sweet Springs Greyhounds.
The scrimmages start at 6:30 p.m.
The Chiefs are coming off a season in which they were 3-4 in the league and 5-5 overall.
Concordia finished last season 3-4 in the I-70 and 3-7 overall, having lost all two non-conference games against Class 2 teams.
The Greyhounds, who were under the direction of newcomer head coach Kris Conley last year, wound up 2014 with a 1-6 mark in the league and 2-8 overall.
In another jamboree involving I-70 squads, Crest Ridge, Wellington and Orrick will be participating at Oak Grove.
Also included in the event will be the squads from Polo, North Platte and Braymer.
The exact pairings were not available at press time, but the entire event starts at 5 p.m.
As for Lone Jack, it will be participating in a three-team event at Midway High School, in Cleveland. Also taking part in the event with the Mules and Vikings, which starts at 7 p.m., is Lincoln.
As for the I-70 Conference volleyball teams, two have confirmed they will be competing in a preseason jamboree.
Taking place on Monday, August 17, will be a jamboree involving the Saint Paul Lady Saints, at Columbia Hickman. Also slated to be there are Sacred Heart, of Sedalia and Blair Oaks, of Wardsville, south of Jefferson city.
The Concordia Lady Orioles, coming off a 28-6-1 season, will be playing at Higginsville on Tuesday, August 18.
