Wellington grinds past Lawson for first hoops win
Defense ruled the day as the Wellington Lady Tigers started a new season of high school hoops by muscling past Lawson 51-44 last Tuesday night on their home court.
Neither side got much traction in the first quarter and Lawson eeked out a 9-7 lead. Wellington shut down the Lady Cardinals in the second period and rallied to grab a 17-13 edge at halftime.
The Lady Tigers got some big perimeter shots in the third quarter and stretched the lead to 35-27. Lawson had its best offensive quarter in the final period, but it was too little too late.
The Lady Cardinals were led by Taylor Dolt with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals. Addy Cress had nine points on three three-pointers, and Malorie Rash grabbed six boards to go with eight points.
Carleigh Jenkins paced Wellington with nine points and three assists. Monica Thornburg poured in eight points, and Kelsey Gray and Jaycee had seven points and two steals each. The Lady Tigers shot 34 percent from the field.
After the season-opening win, the Lady Tigers next hit the court this Friday night in Odessa.
