Lady ‘Hounds wear I-70 softball tourney crown

Wednesday, May 3, 2017

There were runs aplenty during the 2017 I-70 Conference softball tournament, but a wild week ended with the Sweet Springs Lady Greyhounds atop the mountain.

Sweet Springs knocked off Wellington 3-2 in the championship game on Thursday, April 27, to move to 15-2 on the season and avenge an earlier loss to the Lady Tigers.

The Concordia Lady Orioles couldn’t squeak out enough runs on the same day to win the third place game and fell to Lone Jack 6-3.

This came two days after the Lady Orioles lost by the same score to Wellington in the semifinals. Sweet Springs dispatched Lone Jack 12-0 in the other semi.

Concordia moved to the semifinals with a thrilling first-round slugfest win versus rival Saint Paul 15-13 on Monday, April 25. Sweet Springs blanked Orrick 11-0, Lone Jack edged Santa Fe 16-11 and Wellington knocked off Crest Ridge 6-3 in the other first-round games.

The Lady Saints fell to the Lady Cougars 15-0 in a loser’s bracket game on April 25 and lost the seventh-place game 11-6 to Orrick two days later.
