The Concordia Orioles started the 2017 baseball postseason off in dominant fashion, rolling past KC Lutheran 10-0 in the first round of the Class 2 District 15 tournament at the Concordia Sports Complex on Thursday, May 11.

Cameron Cooper led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on a double by Brayden McGinnis. Abram Frerking brought McGinnis home with a base hit and came around to score on a knock by Peyton Moore as part of a 4-0 start for the Orioles.

Two more runs crossed home plate in the second. Cooper reached on a fielder’s choice, and Frerking walked, setting up a two-run single from Moore.

After Matt Gatewood walked and stole second base to lead off the third, Spencer Brown brought him home with a base hit and scored on an error at shortstop. Cooper reached yet again with an RBI base hit to drive in Tate Bittiker and scored on a base knock from Frerking to wrap up the scoring.

Caleb Pfannkuch got the start at pitcher and went all five innings in the 10-run-rule shortened game. Pfannkuch fell two hit batters away from a perfect game, striking out nine in five hitless innings.

After Cooper and McGinnis whacked back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first, Lane Mueller grounded out to short to force in one run, while an error at the same spot brought home another. John Sparks added an RBI single to drive in Moore.

Cooper started a two-out rally in the bottom of the second with a triple, then scored on a base hit by McGinnis. After Frerking was hit by a pitch, Mueller drove in one with a single to right field, and Moore whacked a single up the middle for two more runs.

After a pair of errors set the Orioles up again in the third, Mueller delivered with a two-run single up the gut. Sparks scored on an error in the fourth, and Concordia padded their lead with four more tallies in the fifth, ending the game early via the 10-run rule.

Mueller earned the win on the mound after pitching the first four innings, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out 11. McGinnis punched out three but gave up two earned runs in his only inning of relief.

The Orioles are now 14-4-1 on the season. Concordia moves on to the District 15 semifinals against West Platte.
