LaCoMo East majors softball wins first 2 district games
The LaCoMo East Little League Majors All-Stars started off postseason play with a pair of victories during the district tournament at Higginsville, knocking off LaCoMo Central 10-8 on June 26 before edging Carroll County 5-4 the next night.
In game one, it was Central who actually jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings before East tied things back up with a big rally in the fourth and took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth. Hailey Arnold pitched all six innings to earn the win, allowing six hits and nine walks while striking out 10.
Jewel Koonce fell a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and drove in three runs to go with her three hits. Faith Moore also had three hits and joined Koonce, Cassie Aversman and Jasmine Russell with two runs scored each.
The win over Carroll County required more dramatics. After building a 4-1 lead, East saw the game knotted back up and sent into extra innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Koonce reached on a one-out single and scored the walk-off winner on two outs on a grounder to third base by Arnold.
Arnold again went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, giving up just three hits and piling up 14 strikeouts. Koonce and Russell each smack triples to lead the lineup.
