Concordia Fall Festival 2017 drawing near
The annual 2017 edition of the Concordia Fall Festival is just around the corner.
The festival, which celebrates the agricultural and German heritage of the area, draws visitors from across the region as well as other states. Filled with fun and patriotism, the festival features a midway filled with carnival rides and games, parades, exhibits, bands, food and, of course, a German-style beer garden.
This year’s Concordia Fall Festival Executive Board includes: Erik Wilkens, chairman; Kyle Wilkens, vice-chairman; Russell Faris, secretary; Scott Hemme, treasurer, Eric Fuehring, past chairman; Justin Hemme, advertising chairman; Clint Paul, concessions and placement; Dylan Meyer, advertising vice-chairman; Austin McGinnis, advertising past chairman; Adam Inman, concessions and placement; Chris Petersen, steer stand; Zach Wolski, funf k laufen; and Darl Fuhrman, funf k laufen.
Festivities will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when contestants in the Queen Contest take center stage at the Concordia Community Center.
U.S. Armed Services Appreciation night will be the focus on Wednesday, Sept. 6 beginning at 6 p.m. with twirling performances by Jillian’s Angels Twirling Corps on the Main Street Stage. The evening will include a Kids Parade at 6:30 p.m. The local VFW and American Legion posts will present colors and fire a salute at 7 p.m., followed by a concert on the Main Street Stage featuring the 399th U.S. Army Band from Fort Leonard Wood. There will also be a chance to participate in a Washers Tournament at Heidelberg Gardens. Registration for the contest begins at 6:30 p.m. and the tournament will begin at 7 p.m.
Kids, and adventures seekers, can have some fun during Wristband Night at the carnival from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7.
A full day of activities is slated for Friday, Sept. 8. The annual Baby Health Contest will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Concordia Fire Station, and Kids Country Contests - which includes a water balloon toss and a cup of water race for kids age 4-12 - will begin at 1:30 p.m. The Concordia Comical Parade will begin at 8 p.m., and the carnival midway will be open from 5 to 11 p.m.
A 5k Run/Walk will kick off the activities ay 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. Other Saturday activities include:
10:30 a.m. – Baby Health Contest Presentations.
11 a.m. – Children’s Pedal Tractor Pull.
12:45 p.m. – Ping Pong Drop at Main Street near St. Paul’s Lutheran Church/School
1 p.m. – Motorcycle Competition and Antique/Classic Car Show; registration begins at 10 a.m.
1 to 5 p.m. – Wristband Afternoon at the midway.
1 p.m. – Hubcap Clem Banjo performance on the Main Street Stage.
5 to 11 p.m. – Midway open.
6:30 p.m. – Religious and Decorated Floats Parade; Veteran’s Color Guard Competition.
10:15 p.m. – Steer Stand Drawing for meat and prizes.
The Fall Festival Executive Board, various committees and the Concordia Civic Club, with the support of local businesses and citizen volunteers, oversee the festival.
