Orrick slips up Sweet Springs
The Sweet Springs High School Greyhounds traveled to Orrick High School for an I-70 Conference matchup with the Bearcats on Friday, Sept. 15. Sweet Springs played a relatively clean ballgame, but couldn't stop Orrick’s ground attack, and eventually fell to the Bearcats 36-31.
Sweet Springs didn’t have their best offensive game of the season, but certainly played well on that side of the ball, as senior quarterback Zack Giffen went 4-12 throwing while collecting 118 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Hunter Sims, a sophomore running back, caught three of the passes, racking up 96 yards and two touchdowns while also shouldering the majority of the rushing load, carrying the ball 10 times and collecting 60 yards and two touchdowns in the process. Junior running back Marcus Barney ran the ball six times for 33 yards and a touchdown, while senior running back Nick Ownby caught one pass for 22 yards. Giffen also added nine rushes for 85 yards in helping his team accumulate a total of 187 yards on 29 rushes.
Defensively, Sims (11 total tackles, one interception) was one of a handful of especially-busy Greyhounds. Freshman linebacker Grant Knipmeyer had 10 total tackles and a pass breakup while fellow freshman Anthony Love recorded 12 total tackles from the defensive back position. Sophomore defensive lineman Brandon Green recorded 10 tackles as well.
The loss drops Sweet Springs to 2-3 on the season (2-1 in conference), while Orrick improved to 1-4 (1-3 in conference). Both teams will have their Week 6 matchups on Friday, Sept. 22. Sweet Springs will travel to Alma for a matchup with Santa Fe High School while Orrick will hope to improve their record with a matchup at Lone Jack High School.
