Santa Fe falls to Lady Dragons in sectionals
On Wednesday, Feb. 28, the Santa Fe High School Lady Chiefs varsity girls basketball team traveled to neutral-site Staley High School in Kansas City North for a sectionals matchup with the Mid-Buchanan High School Lady Dragons. Despite playing a back-and-forth game, the Chiefs couldnít pull out the victory, falling to Mid-Buc, 70-59.
In the first quarter, the Lady Chiefs went out to set the tone, and thatís exactly what they did en-route to a 20-16 period victory. Senior Sadie Limback bossed her way to a 13-point quarter, while senior Cara Hinz (three points), junior Josey Burton (two), and sophomore Carrigan Smith (two) also contributed. The Lady Chiefs got a good taste of what they were up against, however, as they allowed senior Jillian Rumpf to score 11 points in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Santa Fe hit some problems. Despite only scoring two baskets, the Lady Chiefs were able to connect on seven-of-nine free throws (six from Burton), bringing them to a total of 11 points in the quarter. However, they allowed 22 in the same period, putting the Lady Chiefs in a seven-point hole heading into the half, 38-31.
The third quarter was exactly what coach Jeremy Hobbs ordered, as the Lady Chiefs got back to making baskets from the floor: they connected on five two-pointers this time, while also adding five free throws, bringing them to a 15-point quarter while holding the Lady Dragons to just nine points. Limback added seven of those points, while Burton added six points of her own.
The solid third quarter left the teamís nearly deadlocked heading into the fourth quarter, with the Lady Dragons boasting a one-point advantage. Unfortunately, however, the Lady Chiefs fell behind in the fourth quarter and had to intentionally foul down the stretch. That progression resulted in Rumpf going to the free throw line for 14 attempts, of which - much to the chagrin of Santa Fe faithful - she made 11, while making up for the three missed attempts with a three-pointer. This, coupled with an inefficient offensive quarter (six points each from Limback and Burton), led to the downfall of the Lady Chiefs, who ultimately would lose the matchup, 70-59.
The Lady Chiefs got nearly all of their scoring from Limback (30 points) and Burton (20), while Hinz and Smith finished with four points each. Rumpf scored 37 of her teamís points, with only one other girl reaching double-digits for Mid-Buc.
The loss ended Santa Feís season at 24-5 (5-2 in conference).
In the second round, Mid-Buchanan defeated Tipton High School, 70-37. They will advance to play Northeast (Cairo) High School on March 8, with the winner advancing to the state championship game.
