On Thursday, April 5, the undefeated Concordia High School softball team hosted the Orrick High School Lady Bearcats for an I-70 Conference matchup. The Lady O’s had their way, dismantling the ‘Cats 16-1 in just four innings.
A hot start left this game out of reach for Orrick, as the first eight Orioles to step into the batters’ box would come around to score. Pitching was the biggest issue for Orrick, as they walked 14 Orioles, while recording only 10 outs, before the game was called due to mercy rule. In fact, only four Orioles ended up with a hit, combining for five total.
Every single Oriole batter to step to the plate found a way on base at least one time and scored a run, with freshman Lauren Fiene (2-3, double, triple, walk, three stolen bases, four RBIs, two runs) leading the way. Fiene has been getting it done both from the box and the pitcher’s mound, coming on nicely for the surging Orioles.
Moriah Brooks didn’t have her best stuff from the mound, but the senior was plenty effective enough, allowing just one earned run and four hits over four innings. Despite only striking out one and walking seven, she did an excellent job working out of jams (including getting out of a bases loaded jam, after allowing just one run, in the second inning). Her control will have to improve, but finding the release point is much easier for a pitcher who isn’t sitting through long and productive offensive half-innings, so this performance is likely an outlier, although still a solid outing.
The Orioles are shaping out to be the team to beat in the I-70 Conference, as they advance to 8-0 (3-0 in the I-70 Conference).
Orrick slipped to 0-5 with the loss. Following the conclusion of this game, they had been outscored 54-8.
