Body found in burning vehicle in Lafayette County

On Aug. 6, 2018, fire personnel and deputies were dispatched to an area just south of Interstate 70 and east of McDaniel Road in Bates City, regarding suspicious activity.
The calling party said they could see smoke and believed a vehicle was on fire. The fire was extinguished and upon further investigation, a body was found inside the trunk. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office will be performing an autopsy to determine cause of death and identification.
The Lafayette County sheriff’s office is working with the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s office, Lafayette County Coroner’s office and the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office attempting to identify the body and to identify those responsible for transporting the body into Lafayette County and setting the vehicle on fire.
