Joseph Michael “Joe” Griggs, 75, of Concordia, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, at Good Shepherd Care Community in Concordia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Concordia, with the Rev. Michael Pottschmidt officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia. Pallbearers will be Isaih Griggs, Joshua Bredehoeft, Deraj Kumar, Joe Chenowith, Kevin Maxwell and Greg Eason. Honorary pallbearers will be Luke Griggs, Shane Griggs, Clarence Merritt, Nathan Taylor, Nicholas Griggs, Joseph M. Griggs III, Timothy Griggs, Patrick Bibens, Michael Griggs and Perry Clingan. Cremation will take place after the funeral service, and inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. Born Sept. 20, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., Joe was the son of Katherine Palermo. He was adopted at age 9 by his father, Lafayette Francis (Mike) Griggs. He graduated from St. Augustine Catholic School and William Cullen McBride High School in St. Louis. He served one year in the United States Navy. On Dec. 24, 1960, in Memphis, Tenn., he married Kathleen L. (Kathy) Schmitz, who preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 2016. They were blessed with six children. Joe worked many manufacturing jobs in St. Louis and in many food processing plants in Marshall and Concordia, retiring from Tyson Foods of Concordia in September of 2017. Joe was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as well as St. Paul’s Men’s Club, and enjoyed working the food stand at the Concordia Fall Festival. His favorite activities were watching any and all sports, garage sales, decorating his yard for holidays, and spending time with family.

Joe is survived by four of his children, Tina (Stephen) Bredehoeft of Concordia, Jeffrey Griggs of Sweet Springs, Kimberly (Gregory) Eason of Bowling Green and Andrew Griggs of Warrensburg; a sister, Margaret Griggs of St. Louis; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Sadler of Garland, Texas; and over 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Kathy, Joe was preceded in death by two sons, Jerome A. Griggs and Joseph M. Griggs Jr.; and one grandson, Michael Lee Griggs.
