Concordia plays well at triangular, followed by first win

Wednesday, September 12, 2018

The Concordia Lady Orioles have been playing impressive ball to start the season, playing to tough losses against tough teams in a triangular before picking up their first win of the season.

Triangular Monday, Aug. 27 Concordia HS
Santa Fe 2
Concordia 0 (22-25, 22-25)

A top-tier opponent is always who you want to start your season off with, right?
Apparently so, say the Orioles, who rose to the occasion and played one heckuva game, albeit in a losing effort, dropping both sets to Santa Fe High School.
Plenty of positives poured from the performance. Sophomore Cassidy Warren finished with three aces, while sophomore Carys Brockman (seven digs, two assists) and junior Kailey Ohrenberg (four kills, two digs) did her part, as well.
Taking a perennial powerhouse like Santa Fe to the brink in consecutive sets was encouraging for the Orioles, who hope to make a turnaround in the win column this season.
The Orioles fall to 0-1 (0-0) with the narrow loss to start the season.

Triangular Monday, Aug. 27 Concordia HS
Green Ridge 2
Concordia 0 (25-27, 21-25)
Another excellent team awaited Concordia in the second leg of their season-opening triangular, as they went up against the Green Ridge High School Lady Tigers.
The Os would fall short, but not before taking the first set to extra time and putting up over 20 points in the second set.
Freshman Hali Deatherage dropped three aces on Green Ridge, while Landry Yount, also a freshman, served two aces. Freshman Cate Cooper finished with seven digs and two kills. Junior Kailey Ohrenberg ended with six kills. Frosh libero Kaleigh Benson ended with six digs.
The youth movement was alive in Concordia, albeit in a losing effort. The experience gained across the two matchups should leave the Os smiling, despite falling to 0-2 (0-0) with the loss.

Smithton 1
Concordia 2 (25-18, 13-25, 25-21)
The Concordia Orioles picked up their first victory over Smithton High School on Thursday, Aug. 30, winning 2-1 (25-18, 13-25, 25-21).
Freshmen Cate Cooper and Hali Deatherage finished with four aces each, while junior Kailey Ohrenberg and sophomore Cassidy Warren had three apiece. Cooper (six) and Ohrenberg (five) finished with the most kills for the Lady Os.
Sophomore Carys Brockman led the way in assists with eight. Ohrenberg had nine digs, while Cooper (seven) and freshman Kaleigh Benson (eight) got dirty, as well, while Ohrenberg and Warren each blocked a shot.
The Orioles advanced to 1-2 (0-0) with the victory over Smithton who defeated them last season in straight sets.
