Spikin’ Saints knock off Lone Jack
Thursday, Sept. 28
Lone Jack 1
Saint Paul 2
(23-25, 25-12, 25-21)
A brutal stretch of nonconference games didn’t fall in the Saint Paul Lutheran High School Saints favor, but in their I-70 Conference matchup with the Lone Jack High School Mules, the Saints found enough floor to emerge victorious, winning two sets to one.
A tight loss in the first set gave way to a blowout in set two. With the match on the line in the third set, the Saints found a way to hang on.
Senior Lynda Bennett finished with three aces and no errors on 19 serving attempts, while sophomore Lauryn Bonar had six aces — five on a single serving run — on 15 attempts. Bonar also had seven kills.
“Bonar showed us the kind of dominating player she can be,” head coach Thomas Lange said.
Junior Libero Anna Herl pulled out 15 digs, while senior Karson Troth’s five blocks went a long way toward their victory.
“After a ragged first set, our senior leaders helped us get into a better, positive frame of mind and we played solid volleyball from then on,” Lange said.
The Saints advanced to 5-6-2 (1-0) with the victory.
