Successful Saints volleyball season ends in sectionals

Thursday, November 1, 2018

The Saint Paul Saints fell in the sectional championship game to District 14 champion, St. Michael 0-2 (18-25, 19-25).

“St. Michael was a very disciplined, solid all around team. They play good defense and don’t make mistakes. Their outside hitters seemed to be able to hit any set, no matter where it was. We played well, but we probably needed our best match of the season to pull out a win today. In the second set, we were down by five or six and battled back to 18-20. So, our girls should be proud of their effort. They kept playing hard no matter what.”

Aces: Senior Chloe Fuhrman, Senior Karson Troth — two each

Kills: Sophomore Lauryn Bonar — four; Troth — three; Furhman — three

Blocks: Troth — two

Earlier in the day, Saint Paul defeated Class 2 District 16 champion, Lawson High School, 2-0 (25-20, 25-18).

“I was really pleased with our hustle against Lawson. It wasn’t always the prettiest volleyball, but we kept the ball off the floor and took some good swings when we had the chance. I thought senior Abby Graham had her best setting match of the year, and she served great for us all day too. She doesn’t get her name mentioned very often, but she’s a big reason we won this match without much stress.”

Blocks: Troth and Bonar — two each

The Lady Saints were able to get to this point by emerging victorious in the District 2 Class 15 tournament. After a first round bye in the District 15 tournament, the top-seeded Lady Saints went to Lexington to take on four-seed Trenton High School.

"Trenton played really well and I think we felt the burden of being the No. 1 seed a little bit. Thankfully, we loosened up and started playing better in sets two and three, but it certainly wasn't easy. Sophomore Lauryn Bonar came up big with 21 kills for us, most of which came in those two sets. And we have to also credit our defenders and setters, because that's where the offense starts."

Scores: 25-23, 25-17, 25-18

Sophomore Lauryn Bonar — 21 Kills, three blocks

Senior Karson Troth five kills, three aces, 17 assists, two blocks

Senior Chloe Furhman — three aces

The next — and final — matchup of the district tournament was against host-team Lexington High School.

“Lexington was much improved from our match early in the season. The key was to slow down their number one middle hitter and utilize all the weapons of our offense. I thought we had a balanced attack with good contributions from many players.”

Scores: 25-23, 25-17

Senior Karson Troth — five kills, 24 assists

Senior Maddie Stammer — four kills

Senior Lynda Bennett — four kills

Sophomore Lauryn Bonar — five kills

Junior Brooke Lange — four aces
