Edwin H. Bargfrede
Edwin H. Bargfrede, 85, of Alma, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, at I-70 Community Hospital in Sweet Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alma, with Pastor Michael Gallagher officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia. Pallbearers will be Gavin Bargfrede, Chris Bargfrede, Dennis Rolf, Gordon Brandt, Ivan Brandt and John Zitelman. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery or family choice. Born May 13, 1933, in Alma, he was the son of the late Leonard Bargfrede and Agnes Strathman Bargfrede. He attended St. Peterís Lutheran School, in the Flora Community, and was a member of St. Peterís Lutheran Church until it disbanded. Edwin worked at his fatherís sawmill until he was drafted into the United States Army on May 29, 1953. He received his basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas, and attended Nike Missile School. He was then transferred to Long Island, N.Y., where he was an instructor for the Nike Missile Shore Defense, and was honorably discharged in May 1955. He was a member of American Legion Post 478 in Blackburn.
On May 18, 1958, he married Frances E. Rolf, who preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 2013. Edwin lived in the Alma area his entire life where he was a volunteer fireman for 21 years, and a commissioner for the Alma Special Road District. He was employed with Fiene Plumbing and Heating of Alma and Blackburn for 13 years; and for Central Coop and Alma Farmers Coop as the propane deliveryman for 23 years. Edwin raised cattle with his son, and enjoyed working on the farm, especially driving the grain cart during harvest. He was a lifelong voting member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and held various offices through the years.
Survivors include one son, Larry Bargfrede (Terri) of rural Alma; two grandsons, Tyler Trent Bargfrede and Taylor Bryce Bargfrede (Chelsea); one sister, Edna Carter of Sand Springs, Okla.; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family.
In addition to his parents and wife, Edwin was preceded in death by three brothers: Harlan, Ernest, and Johann Bargfrede; and one sister, Leona Brandt.
