Concordia School Board OKs calendar changes
During the Concordia Board of Education meeting held Thursday, Feb. 14, the board approved amendments to the 2019-2020 school calendar. Superintendent Brent Cooper said he had worked with High School Principal Luke Lucas and Elementary School Principal David Andrade to complete the calendar.
“When we develop the calendar, our focus is on developing a calendar that makes sense for our students, and we have to look at keeping the semesters as close to even as possible,” Cooper reported.
The 2019-2020 school year calendar shows the first day of school will be Aug. 20, 2019. Thanksgiving Break will be Nov. 27-29, and Christmas Break will be from Dec. 23, 2019, to Jan 2, 2020. Spring Break will be from March 12-13, 2020, with graduation scheduled for May 8, 2020. The last day of school will be a half-day of school on May 14, 2020.
The board also amended the 2018-2019 school calendar to include a list of make-up days and a new last day of school.
“We have realized that we mistakenly listed Monday, May 27, as one of our snow make-up days,” Cooper reported. “That obviously is the Monday of Memorial Day weekend. Since we currently have to make up eight snow days, and only have six built in to our calendar, we needed to make some adjustments to the calendar to get all of the make-up days in. We received input from staff, students and district patrons before making any amendments.”
The updated calendar includes the following:
—Friday, March 8 - full day.
—Monday, March 11 - full day.
—Thursday, April 18 - full day.
—Friday, April 19 - half day, dismiss at 11:30/11:40.
—Monday, May 20 - full day.
—Tuesday, May 21 - full day.
—Wednesday, May 22 - full day.
—Thursday, May 23 - half day, dismissal at 11:30/11:40 - Last day of school.
During his report to the board, Cooper announced Alexis Borgstadt as the winner of the Winter Semester R-2 School Bard Scholarship.
Cooper also reported the September 2018 through January 2019 school membership count. In September of 2018, Concordia Elementary School reported 281 students. In January 2019, CES reported 284 students, which includes 51 pre-kindergarten students. Concordia High School numbers for the same months were 197 and 194 respectively. The total student count for the district in September 2018 was 478, compared to 476 as of January 2019.
Cooper also noted the Concordia Soccer Club would be disbanding.
“I was informed by the Concordia Soccer Club that they will be disbanding and will no longer organize a league for the area kids to play soccer,” Cooper reported. “They are not sure whether the city will take over the program or not. They (the Concordia Soccer Club) have been taking care of the facility – mowing, etc. – and will no longer be doing that.”
The board approved a bell schedule for the 2019-20 school year, denoting a change from the four-block schedule to a tradition seven-period schedule. Lewis gave a short explanation of the changes.
“The new schedule shortens the time between class periods to allow for more instructional time and to help manage the schedule to work better with the bus dismissal at both the elementary and high school buildings,” he said. The new bell schedule will be as follows:
—7:30 a.m., doors open.
—7:30 to 7:55 a.m., breakfast is served.
—8:00 a.m., doors lock.
—8:00 a.m. to 8:53 a.m., first hour.
—8:57 a.m. to 9:50, second hour.
—9:54 a.m. to 10:47, third hour.
—10:51 a.m. to 12:11 p.m., fourth hour.
—12:15 p.m. to 1:08 p.m., fifth hour.
—1:12 p.m. to 2:05 p.m., sixth hour.
—2:09 p.m. to 3:02 p.m., seventh hour.
—First lunch shift, 10:51 a.m. to 11:11 a.m.
—Second lunch shift, 11:21 a.m. to 11:41 a.m.
—Third lunch shift, 11:51 a.m. to 12:11 p.m.
The board also approved June 3, 2019, as the first day of summer school.
