Talented Orioles tracksters to hit the ground running in program’s second year
In just the program’s second season since restarting the track and field team, the Concordia High School Orioles boys and girls track athletes are expecting some big things out of their excellent athletes.
In their first season back, head coach Steve Denton wasn’t exactly sure how his Orioles would stack up in terms of competing and expectations, but he was impressed by the time the season ended.
“By the end of the season, we had a few standout athletes and performances,” Denton said. “Most of our athletes know what performance mark they are currently at, and know where they need to be to be competitive. These athletes want to compete and win.”
They will have plenty of talent to get the job done. Junior Colby Stein will look to make another state run in the long jump, as well as hopefully adding appearances in a handful of races. Sophomore Carys Brockman will also hope to get back to sectionals after qualifying in 2018 in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
With plenty of new athletes set to compete this season, there will surely be a few surprises to monitor as the meets progress and they get closer to their Class 1 District 6 Meet (May 4). Ultimately, the goal is simple for Denton and his athletes: “Increase team points at the conference meet, and have more athletes qualify for the sectional meet, then state meet,” Denton noted.
The Orioles will certainly be a squad you’ll want to follow along with as they progress through their 12-meet season (including I-70 Conference meet and districts) and hopefully bring some hardware back from the state meet.
