Walter E. “Red” Homfeld
Walter E. Homfeld “Red”, 76, formerly of Higginsville, died June 13, 2019, at Oak Grove Nursing and Rehab.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Salem United Church of Christ, with Dr. Tommy Faris officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery. Casket bearers were his grandsons Matt Karney, Jake Karney, Josh Karney, Cole Homfeld, Lane Homfeld and Eric Reese. Memorials are suggested to Salem UCC or the Shriners Children’s Hospital. He was born June 9, 1943 in Higginsville to Louis and Dora (Bergsieker) Homfeld. After his full time service in the National Guard, he went to work at Lake City, where he worked for over 25 years. While at Lake City he started working for, and then purchased, a trucking company that would become Walter Transport. He was a Boy Scout Leader and a lifetime member of the East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 630.
Survivors include four sons: Eddie Homfeld of Grain Valley, Tim Karney of Gladstone, Daniel Karney of Blue Springs, and Bill Karney of Independence; a sister, Mary Dickmeier (Hurbert) of Corder; 11 grandchildren, Matt, Becky, Jake, Josh, Sarah, Lane, Cole, Desiree, Michael, Becky and Andrea; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; a brother, Ryland; a sister, Delores Fricke; and two grandchildren, Holly and Ryan.
