Lafayette County 4-H/FFA Fair right around the corner
The 2019 Lafayette County 4-H/FFA Fair will be held July 13-18, at the Fairground Park and Fairgrounds and the Lafayette C-1 Middle School Gym in Higginsville.
4-H Achievement Day was held on Saturday, June 22, the at the Lafayette C-1 Middle School in Higginsville. Events included judging contests, public speaking, demonstrations, fashion revue, Clover Kid activities and king and queen contest.
The Horse Show will be held on Saturday, July 13, and will begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Higginsville Fairground Horse Arena. There will be lots of horses at this year’s show.
The Dog Show will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 15, at the Fairground Park Horseshoe Pit. Dog agility classes will be held again this year.
All exhibits will be entered on Monday, July 15, at Lafayette C-1 Middle School in Higginsville. Exhibits can be viewed by the public at Lafayette C-1 Middle School Gym on Monday night from 7:30-9 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon and 5-8 p.m., Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m., and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Exhibits will be released from the fair at the Middle School on Thursday afternoon from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. All exhibits must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 18. State Fair exhibits will be chosen July 15.
The Cat Show will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, July 15, at the Shelter House, with the Clover Kids Pet Show and Fun Night at 5:30 p.m. at the 4-H Pole Barn. The Rabbit Show will begin at 5:30 p.m. that evening at the Shelter House.
Tuesday, July 16, events begin with the Dairy Show at 9:30 a.m., with the Bucket Calf Show immediately following. The Beef Breed Show will follow the Bucket Calf Show and the Market Heifer and Steer Show will finish out the shows for that day.
A popular event with the 4-H members has been the Super Farmer Contest, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Arena on Tuesday evening, July 16.
The Sheep Show will begin Wednesday’s events at 9 a.m. at the 4-H Pole Barn, followed by the Goat Show at the 4-H Pole Barn. All livestock events will be held at the 4-H Pole Barn in Fairground Park.
The Rocket Shoot Off will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday on the east side of Lafayette C-1 Grandview School. The Poultry Show will conclude that day’s activities beginning at 6 p.m. in the Shelter House.
The Swine Show will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, at the 4-H Pole Barn. The Cured Ham Contest will be held at 9 a.m. that day at the Fairground Park Community Building.
Also on Thursday, The Higginsville Chamber of Commerce Picnic for the 4-H and FFA members and their families will be held at the Shelter House across from the Ed Schwitzky 4-H Building from 5-6:30 p.m. before the 4-H and FFA awards presentation which will begin at 6 p.m. at the 4-H Pole Barn.
In an effort to make the auction flow smoother, a ham silent auction will be held of all blue ribbon hams, except the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion smoked and non-smoked hams. The silent auction will be held near the Ed Schwitzky 4-H Building from 6-6:45 p.m. Thursday.
Following the awards presentation will be the auction, to begin at 7 p.m. This year, the auction will be a Premium Only Livestock Auction. This means the animals will be retained by the exhibitor. The order of the auction will be beef, rabbits, sheep, poultry, goats, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion smoked and non-smoked cured hams, and swine.
As a follow-up to the beef, sheep, goat and swine contests, a carcass show will be held on Tuesday, July 23, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Higginsville Processing Plant. The carcass show will evaluate all market animals exhibited in the Lafayette County Fair and sent to Lafayette County packing plants.
