Concordia family named Missouri State Fair Farm Family of the Year for Lafayette County

The Paul and Joyce Freund family, of Concordia, has been selected as the Missouri State Fair Farm Family of the Year for Lafayette County. The family also includes sons Austin (19), Nathaniel (16) and Ryan (11).

Paul is a fifth-generation farmer. He and his family own and operate a dairy farm where they raise corn, soybeans, and alfalfa and grass hay. They farm a total of 581 acres: 174 in corn, 127 in soybeans, 100 in alfalfa and 180 in grass hay. In the dairy, they work 131 cows and 173 heifers. Paul is also a dealer for Renk Seed.

In his farming operation, Paul uses cover crops and no-till in his farming operation. In addition, he incorporates the use of apple cider vinegar in the dairy herd to prevent and/or remove virtually all forms of internal and external parasites. ACV contains probiotics, minerals, vitamins and immune tonic to resist disease. He also uses all-natural salt to give his cattle micronutrients.

Paul is a member of the Lafayette County Cattlemen Association, Santa Fe Agri-Leaders, Dairy Farmers of America (delegate), St. Matthew Lutheran Church (head usher) and the Missouri Dairy Association (delegate). He also serves as a 4-H Leader for Dairy, helps FFA members prepare for the Dairy Contest, and hosts the District FFA Dairy Contest.

Joyce is a member of the Lafayette County Cattlemen Association, substitute teaches for area schools, and is the bookkeeper on the farm. She is a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where she is a former member of the finance board and a current member of the Ladies Aid and church secretary, as well as serving as a substitute Sunday School teacher.

Austin is a member of the FFA and has held various offices, a member of Professional Agriculture Students (an agriculture club at his school), and a former president of the Walkenezer 4-H Club. Austin attended Saint Paul Lutheran High School, where he was involved in drama and the Math Team. He currently attends State Fair Community College in Sedalia. He is a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where he is active in the youth group and as a voting member and usher as well as being a former acolyte. In 2018, Austin was a finalist for Dairy Entrepreneurship Proficiency, and he recently returned from Ag Club National Convention, where he placed second in Career Planning on the national level.

Nathaniel is active in the FFA and is a former Jr. Treasurer of the Walkenezer 4-H Club. At Saint Paul Lutheran High School, he is active in soccer and basketball. He also participates in an ag-related class at Concordia High School and is a member of the FFA. Nathaniel is a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where he is an usher, is active in the youth group, and is a former acolyte.

Ryan is a member of the Walkenezer 4-H Club. He attends St. Paulís Lutheran School, where he plays soccer and basketball. He is a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he attends Sunday School and serves as an acolyte.
