Markus John Matthews
Markus John Matthews, age 79, of Lincoln, Missouri, formerly of Alma, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, at his home.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow the funeral at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Build Fund or the Benton County Hospice c/o the Davis-Miller Funeral Home, 119 W. Main Street, Lincoln, Mo., 65338.
He was born on Dec. 25, 1939, in Lafayette County. He was baptized and attended grade school at St. Peterís Lutheran Church in the Flora Community south of Alma. When the school closed, Mark attended Trinity Lutheran School in Alma and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on April 11, 1954, by Rev. A.F.C. Photenhauer. Mark attended Alma High School and graduated in 1958.
On Sept.18, 1960, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Kempfe. They continued to make their home in Alma, where Mark farmed and worked various jobs. He liked cutting wood, building, and coyote hunting with family and friends. He loved music, especially country bluegrass and gospel. He played the guitar and enjoyed playing music and singing with his talented family members.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; a son, Mitchell Matthews, of Lincoln; a daughter, Diane Sherrill, of Brighton; a granddaughter, Mikayla Sherrill; a sister, Barbara Sander and her husband Edward, of Alma; a sister-in-law, Alleen Matthews, of Alma; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, John Matthews, on July 17, 1971, and his mother, Laura (Bargfrede) Matthews, on March 12, 1982; his brother Orville on Oct. 3, 1988; his sister Mariam on April 27, 2019; his brother-in-law Ervin Martens and his sister-in-law Marilyn Ohrenberg.
