Week 7 — I-70 Conference — Crest Ridge HS
Sweet Springs 22
Crest Ridge 28

The Sweet Springs High School Greyhounds football team traveled to Crest Ridge High School for a matchup that could determine the fate of the I-70 Conference championship, as both teams were tied for the top spot with room separating the remaining squads. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, the Cougars were able to grab the momentum in the first half and hold off the ‘Hounds for the 28-22 victory.
Four first half touchdown passes were able to give the Cougars all of their 28 points, but Sweet Springs got on the board in the first half as well, with sophomore Cole Lovercamp taking a kickoff return to the house from 79 yards out. Following a successful 2pt conversion attempt, Sweet Springs went into the halftime break down 28-8.
The Greyhounds defense rose to the occasion in the second half, keeping the Cougars off of the board. Junior Grant Knipmeyer found pay dirt on the ground from 34 yards out with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter to move the game to 28-14 following an unsuccessful 2pt attempt. Senior Hunter Sims was also able to cross the plane, his coming on a 13-yard rush with 3:25 left in the fourth quarter. They were able to convert on the ensuing 2pt conversion to draw the score to 28-22, but wouldn’t be able to get the game-tying touchdown before the final whistle blew.
Sims was only able to complete three of his 11 passing attempts, collecting 33 yards in the process. He was the leading rusher, however, collecting 145 yards and a touchdown on his 26 rushing attempts. Lovercamp turned 15 carries into 110 yards, while Knipmeyer collected 53 yards across six carries.
As if tough losses weren’t hard enough to swallow in their own rite, the Greyhounds very well lost their shot at an I-70 Conference championship with the loss.
The matchup was the closest between the two teams since at least 2010. Crest Ridge has won all 11 of their matchups with Sweet Springs since 2010.
A matchup with one-win Lone Jack HS awaits the ‘Hounds in Week 8, and is a game they need to walk away with to ensure they can bounce back before a tough Week 9 matchup with Wellington-Napoleon HS before district play opens up.
Sweet Springs falls to 4-3 (3-1) with the loss.
Crest Ridge claims the top spot in the I-70 Conference with the victory, moving to 5-2 (4-0).
