Notes from the Coach: SPLHS football season ends on road in postseason play
The Saint Paul Lutheran High School Saints traveled north as the No. 8 seed in Class 1 District 5 postseason play to face off against the No. 1 seed Marceline High School Tigers. The freshly melted snow made for a sloppy playing surface, and both teams struggled to get their footing or anything going offensively on their first few opening drives. Marceline seemed to find an answer midway through the first quarter and never looked back. By half, the Tigers had jumped out to a 40-0 lead over the Saints, who continued to struggle with field position and an impressive Marceline defense.
The Saints were more successful in the second half, ending the third quarter with a 29-yard touchdown pass from senior Luke Roepe to fellow senior Josiah Kunkel. Marceline wasn't done either though. Taking advantage of a short field, the Tigers punched in another score, leaving the Saints wanting at 48-6.
The Saints were, however, able to end their season on a high note with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Roepe to sophomore Ethan Kirby as time ran down. The final play of the season was a 2-point conversion where senior offensive tackle Avery Johnson lined up in the backfield and carried the ball over the goal line, ending the game at 48-14.
The Marceline Tigers (9-1) will play host to the four-seeded Carrollton HS Trojans (5-5) Friday, Nov. 8 in the Class 1 District 5 semifinal — the winner of which will go on to play the winner of the other semifinal contest between the three-seeded Sweet Springs HS Greyhounds (8-2) and two-seeded Slater HS Wildcats (Go Hounds! Great to see strong representation from the I-70).
