VFW to host awards banquet
The Concordia VFW Post No. 5649, and its auxiliary, will host the annual Youth Voice of Democracy and Patriotís Pen Scholarship Awards Banquet on Nov. 19.
The evening will begin with a social and fellowship time at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with additional awards, commendation and raffle to follow.
Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 40,000 ninth- through 12th-grade students from across the country enter to win their share of $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
Patriotís Pen is a youth essay competition that gives students an opportunity to express their views on patriotism. Patriotís Pen essay writing contest is open to students in grades six through eight who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial school or home study program in the United States and its territories.
The pubic is invited to attend this celebration. Cost for the dinner is $15 per person. Deadline for dinner reservations is Sunday, Nov. 10, and no dinner reservations will be accepted at the event. For dinner reservations, call 660-463-2714 (daytime only) or 660-641-1053.
