Notes from the Coach: Lady Saints stay strong, finish fourth in state tourney

Friday, November 15, 2019

Lange: “Though we weren’t able to win a set in the Class 2 State Tournament, it was a big accomplishment for our team to get there. We played our best in the postseason when it counted to earn the trip to the state tournament. Our end of the season ranking was 22nd among class 2 teams. Our three opponents at the final four were ranked first, third, and sixth, so we knew we had our work cut out for us!”

Friday, Nov.8 — State Championship, pool play game one — Show-Me Center (Cape Girardeau)
Saint Paul Lutheran 0
St. Pius X (Festus) 2 (25-15, 25-12)

Senior Libero Anna Herl - six digs
Sophomore Setter Adrien Martens - five assists, three digs
Senior Setter Katie Wing - two assists, three digs
Sophomore DS Carleigh Stockman - three digs
Junior MH Lauryn Bonar - four kills, two blocks
Junior OH Ina Traavik - three kills, six digs
Senior MH Kayla Muehler - two kills, one block
Senior RH Hope Muehler - one kill, one block
Junior RH Hanna Utne - one kill, two blocks
Lange: “We got off to a good start against a tough team. Though we played from behind most of the first set, we competed well. In the second set, St. Pius’ serve attack really took its toll on us. We hadn’t seen serving that tough all season long, which makes it hard to prepare for.”

Friday, Nov.8 — State Championship, pool play game two — Show-Me Center (Cape Girardeau)
Saint Paul Lutheran 0
Hermann 2 (25-9, 25-15)

Senior OH Brooke Lange - seven digs
Sophomore Setter Adrien Martens - four assists, four digs
Senior Setter Katie Wing - three assists, three digs
Sophomore DS Carleigh Stockman - four digs
Junior MH Lauryn Bonar - seven kills, one block, one ace
Senior MH Kayla Muehler - five kills
Junior RH Hanna Utne - two kills, two assists
Lange: “Hermann HS went on to win the Class 2 championship, and for good reason. They took control in the match immediately and didn’t let up, led by the most dynamic middle hitter we’ve seen this year, junior Grace Winkelman. I was happy with the way we attacked, getting 15 kills of our own. We had to, as Hermann played almost error-free, making us earn every point.”

Friday, Nov. 8 — State Championship, pool play game three — Show-Me Center (Cape Girardeau)
Saint Paul Lutheran 0
Licking 2 (25-22, 25-19)

Senior Libero Anna Herl - 14 digs
Sophomore Setter Adrien Martens - nine assists, four digs, two aces
Senior Setter Katie Wing - six assists
Sophomore DS Carleigh Stockman - six digs
Sophomore OH Grace Hartwig - one kill
Junior MH Lauryn Bonar - four kills, three blocks
Junior OH Ina Traavik - four kills
Senior MH Kayla Muehler - six kills, one block
Senior RH Hope Muehler - three kills
Junior RH Hanna Utne - three kills, one block
Lange: “We held a four point lead late in the first set at 21-17, but a combination of our own errors and Licking’s solid play allowed them to come back and win. Both teams played a little tired from the previous day’s travel and the nerves of being at state. I’m proud that the Lady Saints kept working hard even as things weren’t going our way later in the match.”

Saturday, Nov. 9 — State Third Place Match — Show-Me Center (Cape Girardeau)
Saint Paul Lutheran 0
Licking 2 (25-13, 25-19)

Senior Libero Anna Herl - five digs
Senior OH Brooke Lange - five kills, three digs
Senior Setter Katie Wing - three assists, four digs, one ace
Sophomore DS Carleigh Stockman - two digs
Junior MH Lauryn Bonar - three kills, three blocks, one ace
Senior RH Hope Muehler - two kills, one block
Junior RH Hanna Utne - two kills, four assists, three digs
Lange: “Going into Saturday’s match, we knew we would be without setter Adrien Martens, who left after Friday’s pool play to run in the state cross country meet on Saturday. Hanna Utne filled in well, but having a different setter in the lineup throws off the chemistry a bit. We hoped we would be able to adjust and still play our best, but our hitting wasn’t quite as potent as we needed it to be to get a tough Licking team on their heels. For their part, Licking played better than they had the day before and deserved the win.”

Sophomore Grace Hartwig - one kill
