Saturday, Nov. 16 — Class 1 State Quarterfinal — SPLHS
SPLHS 2
KC Barstow 1 (OT)

This was a tough quarterfinal matchup against Barstow High School, the defending state champs and ranked second in the state.

We started off with a nice push early, but Barstow came ready to play. They drew first blood in the 11th off a crossing pass from the left corner that was knocked in on the far post. It wasn’t until the 33rd minute that we got the equalizer, with junior Daniel Onarheim knocking down a shot from 35 yards out. The Barstow keeper got shielded on the shot and didn’t see it until it was past him.

The score stayed that way for the remainder of regulation. The Saints had the better scoring opportunities, with 16 shots to eight, including a nice attack in the box late that probably should have been afforded a penalty kick.

In overtime’s fifth minute, sophomore Koryn Babor was the game winner, played a long pass out of the defensive third to junior Haakon Arnesen, who came up with it and beat both a defender and the keeper to send us to the Final Four.

We play Greenwood High School at noon this Friday, Nov. 22, in Fenton.
