Lady Saints fall in home opener
Monday, Nov. 25 - Nonconference - Saint Paul Lutheran HS
Sacred Heart 45
Saint Paul 35
It wasn’t the ideal start to the season for the Saint Paul Lutheran High School Saints girls basketball team, falling 45-35 to a Sacred Heart High School team that was able to create turnovers and get ahead early, coasting to the victory.
A lopsided first quarter turned out to be the game-deciding quarter, as the Gremlins limited the Saints to two points while scoring 12 of their own. Things could have come out worse - the Saints turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter - but luckily SPLHS was able to limit transition baskets in the period.
Two tighter quarters in the middle helped the Saints stay competitive, entering the fourth quarter 38-24, but the Saints wouldn’t be able to make up enough ground to get the game back in the final frame.
Twenty-six of the Gremlins’ points came from the point, and they would add another 11 from the free throw line.
Senior Cynthia Bennett and sophomore Adrien Martens (seven rebounds, three assists) each scored nine points, while sophomore Hailey Arnold collected seven rebounds and six assists next to her eight points.
The Saints fall in their season-opener, moving to 0-1 (0-0).
The Gremlins avenged a bad season-opening loss to get back to .500 at 1-1.
