Orioles fall at buzzer to Knob Noster
Despite a few tremendous performances by the Concordia High School Orioles boys basketball team in their nonconference matchup with Knob Noster HS, letting a lead turn into a tie before a Panther was able to knock down a game-winning 3-pt field goal to give the Orioles a 57-54 loss.
A small lead developed in the first quarter as the Orioles jumped ahead 12-9 behind four points each from junior Peyton Moore and senior Colby Stein.
The Oriole lead would jump to seven points heading into the halftime intermission as senior Brayden McGinnis went off for 10 points and the Orioles advantage grew to 27-20.
Unfortunately for the Orioles, an excellent third quarter by the Panthers not only drew the two teams back to even, but would give them a 38-37 lead heading into the final quarter despite Moore knocking down a 3pt shot and a 2pt shot.
Junior Troy Brandt stepped up in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of his team’s 17 fourth quarter points, but with the score tied, an inbound pass found its way to a Panther guard who was able to knock down a 3pt shot with less than two seconds left. The Orioles wouldn’t be able to match the score with the clock working against them, ultimately costing them a 57-54 defeat to their Class 3 opponents.
It was an unfortunate ending for the Orioles after four players scored nine or more points — 12 of Brandt’s team-high 17 points came in crunchtime, while McGinnis would add four more points outside of his 10-point second quarter for a total of 14. Moore also earned 12 points, while Stein finished with nine points.
The Orioles fall to 5-2 (0-0) with the loss. Their losses have each been by three points, but the Orioles will likely earn a chance at redemption with Knob Noster (5-2) in the I-70/MRVC East Showdown.
